The Exact Reason You’re Gaining Weight in Menopause (& How To Prevent It!) – Episode 95

If there’s one thing I think all women can agree with, it’s that menopause can really suck the life out of us:

-belly fat gain (UGH!)

-night sweats/hot flashes

-cellulite

-mood swings

The list goes on!

And for women who haven’t yet entered menopause, it can be especially terrifying wondering how their own bodies are going to respond. After all, it’s not often we hear about how beautiful this phase of our lives can really be.

But I’m making it my mission to change all of that.

I’m a firm believer that the more knowledge we have about menopause and how our bodies change before, during, and after it, the better and more beautiful our experience will be. Armed with the proper tools, I really believe all women are in far better control of how their bodies will respond in this part of their lives. Yes, the hormonal cascade is inevitable, but the symptoms that so many women endure don’t have to be!

In this episode, I’m tackling one of women’s biggest fears over menopause: belly fat gain! I divulge the exact reasons most women gain weight even before they technically hit menopause, which foods to avoid to ensure your sexiest midsection, and the precise macronutrient ratio to aim for so you’re able to still burn fat despite the hormonal changes.

I also give you 3 steps you can implement right away, whether you’re peri- or post-menopausal, to ensure you’re on the right track to your hottest, healthiest, and strongest menopausal body!

This episode is packed to the brim, so get ready!

Love Kim xo

Quotes

“Menopause causes a metabolic shift in the way your fat is distributed.”

“I just love the human body. I think if we could just understand the human body more, we could have so much more control over our lives, health, fitness, and fat gain!”

“The main reason your body stores fat in menopause is because it becomes insulin resistant—a result of a drop in sex hormones.”

I am in menopause and have been for some years now. It is so depressing to see my body not respond the way I want to. I am appreciate the information as to why and I thank you for it!

  2. Wendy says:

Good Morning, thank you very much, I really enjoyed your topic of Menopause.
I also like your sister started going through the change early. I had my daughter quite late in life at 43, 15months later I was Menopausal.
I was unable to try HRT as I had a DVT in my left leg which went hard and would not break up with medication. I have always been into my fitness, mostly light weight and lots of Cardio, Mountain Climbing and Dirt bike riding was my passion, the riding kept me pretty fit for many years. I think things really changed for me once I took on the care for my Mother who has Dementia. My father used to look after her, but he had a Stoke and was placed in Care. I have found that with running around after my parents and my daughter left very little time for me, especially with work commitments, my training basically stopped and where I had always been 65kg through my 30s and 40s I gained weight like never before. I was 80.6kg last year, felt bloated and just awful, the night sweats were thru the roof, I was irritable and really felt like who the hell am I? My youngest brother was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer just over 2 yrs ago now, so I have also been helping support him and did a lot of research around Cancer and Cures. So I have been making him CBD oil which has had fantastic results. My brother also went Vegan and after seeing his results I thought we’ll if he can do it as sick as he is, I’m pulling my finger out and doing it too. So I saw your Sculpted Vegan Butt Camp and thought this is just the kick up the Bum I need. I have bought a Squat Rack last week and have a weight bench with I hope enough weights to be able to shed some Cellulite from my Butt, that’s what I dislike the most on my body, I managed to loose 10kg last year, so I think with the program I should be able to loose a few more kg and firm up some flabby areas. I guess my biggest worry is my neck with training. When I was 36 I had a serious motor bike accident, and at 54 I am now only realising how my damage I actually did. I have bone spurs and a bulged disc which is pinching nerves. I am trying to avoid surgery so I’m seeing a Physiotherapist to help with the Headaches which are pretty severe. I’m on a nerve blocker but it makes me very tired in the morning, I’ve never been very good at training early hours so we will see how it goes I guess. I will give it my all as I figure it’s only 8wks out of the whole year and I really need the motivation and support knowing that hundreds of others are doing it too. Thank you for your program, you are my new inspiration, I would love to look like you 😊 kind regards, Wendy Pym.

    Heya Kim!

Just opened and read your post – about to watch the VID. So ready for this. Post menopausal and after 25 years of TRAUMA in relationship, my body tells the story. It’s all there. Navigating ‘the breakup’ and he’s taken all $. So, not much has changed. OTHER THAN, now I can say YES and ask for help and pay it forward too.

I love the inspiration and motivation that you are and how you remind us – we choose it, we be it!

LOVE to you and the gorgeous SV Team.

    • The Sculpted Vegan says:

I hope you are keeping well, dear! Keep saying YES! 😃 We love you 💕

Kim – Thank you, thank you, thank you! I SOOO appreciate the wealth of knowledge and learning I gain listening to all your podcasts, but this one has lit a fire. Past two years I have been in limbo (like everyone else I assume) and I needed to hear this information now. I just got yearly bloodwork done as I am perimenopausal and am considering HRT. That being said, I am going to do your program on the 24th (Butt Camp) to kick-start my journey of re-gaining “me”. I can’t thank you enough for exploring this topic and making it part of your program going forward. Much love!!

    Menopause, menopause
    Has so many flaws,
    Too much estrogen
    Not enough Peloton

    Insulin resistant
You just need to be consistent
    Increase your fibre
Hope you won’t need a diaper

    Lower that body fat
And don’t eat that Kit Kat
    Meditate, meditate
    Please don’t hesitate

    So much info
    Might turn into a nympho
    Fingers crossed
    I won’t get lost

    Great podcast Kim ❤️

Well I put my ear buds in and thought this would be a good podcast to listen to while dozing off to lala land…boy was I wrong! Packed with so much information that I was like “I must write this shit down”…as I shall be when I listen to it again! Forgot how informative your podcasts were and this is such a superbly information packed session…a very rich one indeed and a must listen to! I’ve always loved how you speak and get right to the jist of things. I’m in perimenopause now and skipping like a pebble across the pond and loved every second of it…thankyou for sharing Kim. I am so looking forward to what’s ahead with your menopause programming!!

    • The Sculpted Vegan says:

  14. Angie says:

Hello! I just listened to this episode and found it so helpful and informative. I just turned 50 and have been exercising religiously since my teenage years, however, that belly fat and fat around my thighs and butt is for sure starting to happen. I have a question about nutrition for those who are approaching menopause or perhaps in menopause and are following the bootcamp program. In that program, foods that are white like bagels, rice, hamburger buns, etc, are part of the nutrition plan (in addition to sweet potatoes, oatmeal). If these foods should be avoided as you mention in this menopause podcast, how does this change the nutrition program for menopausal women? I’d appreciate your thoughts on this. And thank you for creating an informative, research based podcast!

  15. Diana Lester says:

Hi Kim: I am in menopause, and last year at age 60 I did your 8-week Butt Camp and lost 12 pounds, and felt a lot better about myself. I had been feeling dejected, thinking that my weight gain was irreversible, and was so inspired when you taught me that it wasn’t that I went on to do Wildfit and lost 26 more pounds over the year. It *is* possible, and I thank you so much for everything I learned.

  16. Claire says:

Hi Kim , loved this episode it’s so interesting and informative
I’m so glad I found you on Instagram your a true inspiration to me in my life I’m so many ways and to many others 🤍

  17. Kate says:

Hi Kim, interesting pod cast, thank you, especially about the slow carbs. For someone who would normally eat wholegrain breads, high fibre cereals, sandwiches for lunch for handiness and I thought I was eating healthy, what suggestions would you give me to eat for these meals as I can’t see me eating green vegs/beans for breakfast. What are your thoughts on natural yoghurt and fruit/nuts? Thank you.

  18. Diana says:

Wow, that was fantastic! I’ve had to listen to this four times. The first 3, I played before bed and your voice put me to sleep lol(you have a soothing, relaxing voice) this morning I woke realising I’d done it again. I decided to listen to you again while I pottered around starting my day and wow the information I learnt. Turns out I’ve been going through the pre menopause, without knowing it. After listening to this, I realised thats why my body is changing. It feels great to know answers of why I was putting on fat around my hips. Thank you Kim.

  19. alisa zounis says:

    Hi Kim,
Wowsers so much information, I need to triple listen to this again
Iv been listening to your podcast for some time now. And also following your programs, but by far this is one of the most informative podcast I have paid attention to haha I “use” to suffer from insulin resistance and pretty much everything you had mentioned, I tired everything diet to diets, then over a year ago I found you and my body drastically changed, not only was I starting to look good, I was feeling good my mood swings dissipated and my energy levels increased.

I wished that my doctor at the time explained things how you have outlined in your podcast ( I would have had a much more understanding ) I think 🤔 now don’t quote me on that I’m hitting pre – menopause I’m almost 40
And you know when you know.

Thanks again kim loved this one

    • The Sculpted Vegan says:
